First the DSO
created

the Max.

Then it is renamed the 475-seat recital hall inside the
Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center
and promises to dramatically ramp up programming
with an eclectic, multi-genre mix of music
featuring national artists and homegrown talent.
Now it is

-the Cube-

- Cube - Salsa Party- Mambo Marcy - October 2017 -

The Cube in terms of the
Curated, Urban, and Boundless Experience

is delivering audiences.
The programming for The Cube
is strengthening and increasing
Mix @ The Max
(contemporary music mixing food, drink, shopping)
and
Om @ The Max
(a mass yoga session set to live music),
and additional performances throughout the year
that push the boundaries of music
and offer an immersive experience for audiences.

————————
The  rebranding of the small performance space
— which adjoins the DSO’s primary venue —

— Orchestra Hall —

are part of the DSO’s efforts to
broaden its appeal beyond its core
classical, pops and jazz audiences.
The initiative also represents an attempt
to fulfill the unrealized potential
of the expansion of historic Orchestra Hall
opened in 2003 and  became informally known as

– the Max –

- the Cube - Mambo Marcy - October 2017 -

Chris Harrington, who has been managing the orchestra’s Paradise Jazz Series,
assumed the role of curator  for the space.
Harrington,  outlined a range of possible programs for the Cube.

They include

jazz,
hip-hop,
contemporary classical music,
chamber music,
techno,
world music,
post-jazz concert “hangs,”
salsa dances,
yoga with musical acompaniment
artist-curated events
artistic subcultures in metro Detroit.

The Cube is a flexible, multipurpose venue,
offering either cabaret-style seating with tables or tiered theater seats.
The acoustics are good enough for both acoustic and amplified styles.
The DSO also uses the space for receptions.
Next door to the Cube is the smaller
Robert A. and Maggie Allesee Rehearsal Hall,
which anchors the DSO’s Saturday morning education programs
and has become the home for the
Detroit Public Theatre.
